Calico Spanish for Schools: TOPICS

Calendar Time:
Create a dependable, familiar routine for children through Calendar time. A wide variety of topics are presented in this block including special events, patterns, past, present, and future events, as well as key vocabulary like days of the week, months and numbers.

Numbers:
Teach more than counting! Students will learn number names from 1 to 100 but more importantly they will identify a number out of sequence, add and subtract numbers and use simple numbers as a basis for other topics.

Alphabet:
Introduce letters of the alphabet and related vocabulary words in every chapter. Students learn letter sounds and are exposed to Spanish phonemes and reading on a daily basis.

Colors / Shapes:
Bring the world to life, especially for visual learners. In each chapter new colors and shapes are presented through vibrant visual aids and dynamic lessons.

Key Verb Phrases and Action Verbs:
Build students’ communication skills by introducing common verb phrases and conjugations. Students will learn to use the following verbs in the present tense: querer, necesitar, y poder (to want, to need, to be able.) In addition, you will have ample opportunity to present the verbs gustar, tener que y ir (to like, to have to, and to go.) Students will also learn numerous action verbs in the infinitive form. Pairing action verbs with the key verb phrases listed above allows students to express their unique ideas, needs and desires. The Verbos flash cards (Trend Enterprises, Inc.) included with the curriculum set include clear visuals for 94 action verbs, and each of the actions can also be taught with Total Physical Response (TPR) activities.

Animals:
Many students love animals and teaching them in Spanish provides opportunities for students to make connections between the animal sounds and names used in the students’ native culture and the sometimes similar, sometimes different terms and sounds used in Spanish. The Zoológico block of the lesson provides opportunities to review concepts presented in other sections including numbers, action verbs, colors and opposites. Students also use their imaginations during TPR activities related to the animals studied.

Skip Counting with Money:
Introduce patterns, money and review numbers through the use of this dynamic classroom activity. Students have the opportunity to put their math skills to use alongside a new challenge of counting with coins in Spanish. This lesson block provides both group and independent opportunities to skip count in Spanish.

Questions:
Asking and answering questions builds critical communication skills. Each chapter focuses on a specific question word and theme that encourages curiosity. Students are initially encouraged to respond to questions. Gradually they also develop the ability to ask questions in Spanish.

Action Games:
Create community as students come together to learn, practice and play with the Spanish language. A variety of action games are presented and suggestions throughout the teacher’s manual provide ideas to alter games to make them more challenging, practice new vocabulary words, and maintain the sense of wonder and joy that comes with playing interactive games during class.

Parts of the Body:
One on many great themes covered in Level One, other units included are: occupations, the farm, emotions, activities, and food.

Classroom Objects:
Teach your students the Spanish names of important items in your classroom. You’ll receive Spanish labels for 30 common classroom objects. Students will daily see and hear this vocabulary and will soon be using it for themselves. The terms are specifically introduced with one of the interactive games introduced during the game block so that students have a fun, active method to learn and review the names of classroom objects.

Opposites:
This is yet another way to introduce students to new words. Songs and TPR activities make remembering words like up and down, big and small and right and left easy. Visual aids also increase the comprehension and retention of these key concepts.

Traditional Songs and Poems:
Expose students to a variety of Latin traditions through the use of culturally relevant songs and poems. The Mi Guitarrí resources provide excellent audio tools to hear the music and poems as well as visual aids so students can more easily comprehend the lyrics. In addition, the Songbook provides information on traditions and history of key songs so you are equipped to share the rich cultural traditions with your class.
